Description
The CAT scan (computerized axial tomogram) is a special X-ray of the chest using a computer with a special rotating X-ray head. A dye is injected just before the procedure to help delineate the blood vessels. This is an excellent test to determine lumps or tumors in the chest. The picture is actually generated on a computer, so that the results are not always ready immediately as with simple X-rays.
Possible risks
Because a dye is injected, the possibility of an allergic reaction is present. A physician is in attendance and will administer the proper therapy, if needed. You are exposed to small amounts of radiation. (Tell us if you are pregnant.)
Preparation
No restrictions of diet, fluids or medications exist for this examination.
