Famvir or Famciclovir

SIMILAR DRUGS
Zovirax (acyclovir)

Why is this drug prescribed?
Famciclovir is used for the management of genital herpes infections. It does not cure them but it does decrease pain and itching and promotes healing. It is more effective for first-time infections or sores than recurrent sores. Famciclovir decreases the severity of recurrent sores.

When should it be used?
Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully, and ask us or your pharmacist to explain any part that you do not understand. Use this medication as soon as possible after symptoms appear. Famciclovir, in 125 milligram tablets, is usually taken twice a day for five days for recurrent infections.

What special instructions should I follow while using this drug?
Contact us if symptoms do not improve. Try to keep the infected area clean and dry. Wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid irritating the sores. Avoid sexual contact while you have genital sores; Famciclovir does not prevent the virus from spreading to other people.

What should I do if I forget to take a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you have completely forgotten a dose, just continue with regular schedule (do not double dose).
