Health food stores often stock individual brands that come in various strengths and dosage regimens. Yohimbine is sometimes combined with other homeopathic products, such as ginseng and vitamins.

Why is this drug prescribed?
Yohimbine is advertised for treatment of impotence (difficulty achieving or maintaining erections) and has been used as an aphrodisiac (sexual stimulant). Many studies have been done with yohimbine but with mixed results. Some studies show improved sexual performance in about 25 percent of patients. Other studies show no difference at all. Yohimbine required three days to three weeks to become effective in the trials that showed some improvement. Random, uncontrolled studies from some psychiatrists have suggested that yohimbine can restore potency and improve sexual desire in some men taking anti-depressants, such as Prozac.

When should it be used?
Yohimbine should be considered in men with impotence when no clear cut physical reason for the problem is present, or in cases where the sexual problems are mild and may benefit from mild stimulation.

How should it be used?
Yocon comes in 5.4 milligram tablets. One 5.4 milligram pill should be taken three times a day. For other preparations, read the instructions on the label.

There are no special instructions. Yohimbine may be taken with or without food.

What should I do if I forget to take a dose?
Take your next regular dose. Do not double the medication.

What side effects can this drug cause? What can I do about them?
Rise in blood pressure, an increased heart rate, anxiety, inability to sleep, headaches, muscle cramping, dizziness, tremors or nervousness
If symptoms are severe the drug should be stopped until the symptoms subside. Your physician should be notified before you restart the drug.
