Post-Operative Instructions for Semi-Rigid Rod Prosthesis

Activity
Your physical activity is to be restricted immediately following implantation of your penile prostheses. This is particularly true during the first five days after surgery. During that time you should remain relatively inactive and avoid lifting any heavy objects (anything greater than 10 pounds). Apply an ice pack wrapped in a terry cloth towel directly to the scrotum and penis. The ice pack should be applied off and on for approximately 48 hours. The ice will keep swelling down and also act as a pain reliever. Frozen peas or corn in a ZipLoc bag can be used, refrozen, and used again. You should limit stair climbing and any car rides, and avoid driving.

Diet
You may return to your normal diet immediately. I suggest eating fresh fruits and vegetables (roughage) to avoid constipation.

Wound care
As mentioned above, an ice pack should be applied to the scrotum off and on for the first 48 hours following surgery. You will go home with a dressing to protect the incision sites. This gauze should be removed on the first day after your surgery. You may shower at any time following surgery, but avoid scrubbing the incision vigorously and do not take tub baths until told to do so.

Medications
You will be discharged with a narcotic analgesic, Tylox or Percocet. If the pain is not too bad, I encourage you to take simply Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen). You will also be discharged with a supply of antibiotics which you should take according to the directions on the bottle. You may take all your pre-operative medications. If you were taking aspirin, do not start it again for two or three days.

Problems you should report to us
a. Fevers over 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit
b. Excessive swelling of the scrotum and/or bleeding from the incision
c. Drug reactions (hives, skin rash, nausea or vomiting)
d. Marked changes in penile swelling or discomfort

Follow-up
You will need a follow-up appointment to monitor your progress. I would appreciate your calling our office within 24 hours to schedule an appointment for six to seven days following your surgery. The sutures will be removed at this first post-op visit.
