Ureteral Reimplantation Post-Operative Instructions

Diet
Progress to a regular diet, as tolerated. It is not uncommon for your child's appetite to be poor in the first couple days following surgery. Encouragement of fluids is important. Should the urine become darker, increase fluids and rest until this resolves.

Pain management/medications
Upon discharge from the hospital, a prescription for pain medication (usually Tylenol with codeine) will be given. This medication is given every four to six hours, as needed. Ditropan may also be given. This medication will help relieve bladder spasms, which are not uncommon following surgery. Please resume the antibiotic your child was on prior to surgery (give the dose once a day unless specified differently by his physician). Please resume any other medications taken before the surgery.

Care of surgical site
The surgical incision was closed by dissolvable sutures under the skin. Over the incision will be either steri-strips (tape-like strips) or a clear bandage. Both of these will peel off by themselves in one or two weeks. No specific care is required.

Activity
Your child may resume normal activities, except strenuous activity (for example, bike riding, swimming, contact sports) until cleared by us. Once back at school, no PE class until after the first follow-up appointment. Following surgery, it is not unusual for your child to be tired after any activity. This will resolve after a few weeks.

Bathing
Your child may take a tub bath or shower three days after surgery. Avoid soaking in the bathtub for long periods of time. He may use soap to wash in the routine fashion.

Follow-up
We will need to see your child in the office approximately two weeks after surgery. Please call for appointment, unless previously scheduled. Further appointments will be scheduled with appropriate X-rays in order to follow surgical results.

Call us if one of the following events happens
a. Persistent temperature greater than 101 degrees
b. Unrelieved pain after giving prescribed pain medication
c. Extreme redness or drainage from the surgical incision
