Urologic conditions and women’s health

If you’re a woman experiencing a urological condition, you know how life-limiting it can be. Certain female urinary health conditions can make it difficult to work, get exercise or simply perform daily tasks, and can have a dramatic negative effect on a woman’s self-confidence and enjoyment of life. Our Houston urology doctors understand that urinary health is critical to overall women’s health, and we urge you to get the treatment you need to live better.

Common female urinary health conditions

Many women experiencing urinary symptoms don’t discuss them with their doctors. We want you to know that there is nothing shameful or embarrassing about having urinary issues, and that there’s no need to struggle in silence when help is available.

Our Houston urology doctors have extensive experience diagnosing and treating many women’s health issues related to the urinary tract, including both common and rare urological conditions.

Urinary incontinence. More than 35% of U.S. women experience urinary incontinence at some point in their lives, compared with just 7% of men.

Urinary tract infections. Half of women will have a urinary tract infection at least once in their lives, with many women experiencing chronic or recurring UTIs.

Bladder pain syndrome or interstitial cystitis. About 6.5% of women have chronic bladder pain or urgency, often caused by interstitial cystitis.

Overactive bladder. Up to 40% of women have overactive bladder, which can cause them to feel pain, pressure and a strong urge to urinate multiple times a day, even when their bladders aren’t full.

Pelvic organ prolapse. About one-fourth of women in their 40s will have POP, and the odds go up as women age. In their 60s, one-third of women will need help for POP, and when women reach their 80s, half will be affected.

Kidney stones. As many as 10% of women will experience painful kidney stones. Seeking diagnosis and treatment is very important, as untreated stones can cause severe kidney problems and infections.

Additionally, many women are unaware of the close relationship between gynecological health and female urinary health. Houston Metro Urology has a Urogynecologist & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgeon working to improve these interrelated aspects of women’s health through accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment.

Our Houston urology doctors can diagnose and treat all urologic conditions in women, so you don’t have to live with inconvenience or discomfort any longer.
