Blood in urine is called hematuria and can indicate a problem in the genitourinary tract. See our Harris County urologists for help.

Lab Services

Lab services offered at Houston Metro Urology

When our Houston Urologists established Houston Metro Urology in 2006, our goal was to provide complete and comprehensive urology care throughout the Houston area. Diagnostic laboratory services are a vital part of our complete mission to deliver patients the finest, state-of-the-art care possible. Having our own fully accredited clinical laboratory to provide lab services allows us to collaborate as a team. This helps us deliver faster, more complete results for the people we value most—our patients.

Uropathologist Dr. Rita Tibbs leads our diagnostic laboratory services team.

Rita Tibbs, MD FCAP, has worked at Houston Metro Urology since 2006. Our board-certified laboratory director is a Uropathologist who completed her fellowship training in Uropathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Our highly trained lab services team is specifically trained to fulfill all the duties of the laboratory with help, guidance and mentorship from Dr. Tibbs and our lab manager.

Our pathology urologic Laboratory benefits our patients

One of the benefits of seeing our Houston Urologists is the many services we provide for our patients. Providing laboratory services is beneficial for our patients’ health for several reasons.

  • Faster turnaround time for test results
  • Collaboration between laboratory personnel and other team members helps develop comprehensive treatment plans for our patients
  • Our Uropathologist and our physicians work together closely, ensuring accurate diagnoses
  • Having the laboratory in-house ensures cross referencing and correlation of current and previous pathology material for complete and accurate assessment of patient diagnosis, treatment and continual monitoring
  • Laboratory is CAP/CLIA accredited

We offer a wide variety of diagnostic laboratory services

Our diagnostic laboratory services include the following:

  • Microbiology – Urine Culture & Sensitivity
  • Molecular PCR – for Chronic UTI
  • Non-Gynecologic Cytology – Urine Cytology
  • Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) – on urine specimens for Bladder Cancer diagnosis and monitoring
  • Special Chemistry – PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) Free & Total, Testosterone and SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin)
  • Surgical Pathology including Prostate and Bladder Biopsy diagnoses, Testis & miscellaneous GU surgical pathology evaluation
  • Comprehensive Immunohistochemistry (IHC) to aid in diagnosis

The descriptions of these laboratory services may not mean much to patients, but they are critical diagnostic tools that our urologists use to diagnose genitourinary conditions. Getting an accurate, reliable, and timely diagnosis is essential in complete assessment for men and women with urologic problems.
