Our Houston area urologists treat a variety of conditions and illnesses

Urologic Cancer

Urologic cancer affects patients’ urinary tracts and male reproductive organs

Our Houston urologists treat every type of urologic cancer. Cancers of the male reproductive system include testicular, penile and prostate cancer. Cancers in the urinary tract, including bladder, kidney and urethral cancer, affect men and women. Our team has the expertise and knowledge to diagnose and treat these cancers. If a patient needs a specific type of treatment or diagnostics that our team may not offer, we have an oncology partnership with the Houston Cancer Institute.

Risk factors

Patients can’t change risk factors such as age and gender, but they can reduce risk by quitting smoking or eliminating or reducing exposure to certain chemicals. If a patient has one or more of the following risk factors, it simply increases, not guarantees, the chances of getting some type of urologic cancer.

  • For all except testicular cancer, being older than age 55
  • Women have a higher risk of developing urethral cancer, but men are more likely to get kidney and bladder cancer.
  • Family members who have had cancer, particularly urologic
  • Having had and been treated for cancer previously
  • Being exposed to industrial chemicals, such as those used in various manufacturing processes
  • Smoking or using tobacco

Symptoms

Most patients don’t know they have a type of urologic cancer until physicians detect it during an examination. Often, symptoms don’t appear until the later stages of cancer. If patients have any of the following signs, they should see our Houston urologists.

  • Blood in the urine without pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Back pain
  • Sores, swelling or skin changes in the testicles or penis
  • Changes in urination
