Halcyon Radiation Therapy System

The Halcyon radiation therapy system delivers precise, cutting-edge cancer treatment

Can radiation therapy be more comfortable for patients? Can it be faster and more precise? The answer to those questions is yes, thanks to the Halcyon™ radiation therapy system. This state-of-the-art equipment combines high-quality technologies, such as IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) and IGRT (image-guided radiotherapy) with precise 3D imaging, in one treatment system. Our Houston urologists appreciate the ability of the Halcyon radiation therapy system to precisely target tumors while avoiding healthy tissue, making it an excellent treatment option for prostate cancer.

This treatment system was designed with patients’ comfort in mind

The Halcyon radiation therapy system improves patients’ comfort in several ways.

  • The 100 cm diameter opening gives patients more space.
  • The system is water-cooled, so the temperature in the treatment room is comfortable, and the system doesn’t need loud fans.
  • Most treatments only take around 10 minutes on the treatment table. The Halcyon system is about four times faster than traditional radiotherapy treatment.
  • The integrated camera and two-way intercom allow constant patient-to-therapist communication.
  • During treatment, patients can hear music and enjoy ambient lighting.
  • Precisely targeted treatments deliver radiation to the tumor, sparing healthy surrounding tissue.
  • The enclosed gantry design is safer for patients. Also, patients don’t have to see the rotating beams going around them, which can be disconcerting for some patients.

The Halcyon radiation therapy system helps our physicians provide the best possible care

This system allows our Houston urologists to develop a very specific, individualized treatment plan for every patient. The system provides fast 3D imaging that helps our oncologists determine the exact location, size and shape of the tumor. These images help our physicians decide how much radiation to use and the number of treatments needed to target the tumor. This level of accuracy is particularly helpful when treating prostate cancer.

What patients can expect during treatment

Patients lie on the table during treatment. The radiation therapist starts by taking a quick image of the tumor to confirm its location, shape and size. Next, the machine projects precisely targeted radiation beams to the tumor. There are usually about nine steps in each treatment, so patients only spend about 10 minutes on the treatment table. After the treatment, patients can leave the center and go about their day.
