We are experts at treating Peyronie’s disease

If you are suffering from the twists and turns of Peyronie’s disease and penile curvature, you are probably ready to fix the problem. Our experienced Houston urologists are skilled experts when it comes to treating Peyronie’s disease.

First, our team decides what kind of treatment you need

Men’s symptoms can vary if they have Peyronie’s disease, or PD. Some patients have more severe or long-lasting symptoms than others. PD goes away over time in some men. Patients who don’t have pain, issues having sex or urinary problems, and those who have small plaques and a low degree of curvature, may not need treatment. These are all things our experienced team will assess.

If your symptoms are more severe, and your penis is curving and bending in a way that causes problems with erections or other issues, you may benefit from nonsurgical treatment, or in some instances, surgery. Treating Peyronie’s disease can provide long-term symptom relief, so we encourage men to reach out to get evaluated and learn about their options.

Nonsurgical options help many patients

There are two phases of PD: acute and chronic. The acute phase lasts six to 12 months or longer. During this stage, plaques and penile curvature begin to form in the penis. You may also have penis pain when flaccid or erect.

After a year to 18 months of symptoms, you enter the chronic phase, when plaques stop forming, pain lessens or stops, and your curvature usually stabilizes.

Our Houston urologists may suggest treating Peyronie’s disease with non-surgical methods, such as the following.

  • Using a special traction device can help break down plaques by stretching the penis.
  • Vacuum erection devices, or VEDs, help you get an erection by drawing blood to your penis. If you use this device regularly, you may improve your blood flow and penile health, and also reduce your curvature.
  • Oral medications, and medications injected into the penis, can help with symptoms such as pain.
  • Shockwave therapy uses low-intensity acoustic waves to disintegrate the plaques and scar tissue, while also stimulating tissue regeneration.

Treating Peyronie’s disease with surgery is the best option for some patients

If you have severe PD, symptoms that aren’t improving with nonsurgical treatment, painful erections, or a degree of curvature that prevents you from having sex, surgery may be the solution.

  • Surgically straightening the penis with plication surgery.
  • Inserting a penile implant device to help cause an erection. A penile implant may straighten the penis enough to have sex, or it may be used in addition to another surgery.
